The Cabin

About this cabin

Dramatically tucked into a hardwood cathedral of oak and maple, this Tudor-style chalet in Gaylord is the kind of place where the forest feels like an extra room. A long concrete driveway delivers you to a broad wraparound deck and an upper balcony, the dark trim and sage-green board-and-batten siding reading as exactly right against the dense Michigan woods.

Inside the cabin

The main living room earns the space: a soaring knotty-pine barrel-vault ceiling climbs above a floor-to-ceiling river-rock fireplace that anchors the whole room. Diamond-pane sliding glass doors draw the woods inside and spill onto the deck, while a pair of upholstered wingback chairs face the fire — the kind of setup that makes a rainy afternoon a feature, not a problem. The layout is relaxed and unpretentious, with carpet underfoot and warm pine paneling throughout.

The bedrooms

Four bedrooms sleep up to ten comfortably across three bathrooms, generous enough for two families. The king suite has its own slider to the deck, while a second room doubles up with both a twin and a full for the younger crowd. The upper balcony gives the top-floor room a treetop perch that's hard to beat at sunrise.

Outside your door

The wide wraparound deck is the social heart of the property, big enough for a full group to spread out, with the hardwood canopy overhead blocking the worst of the afternoon sun. Birdsong and the occasional rustle in the understory are the only soundtrack.

What's Nearby

Gaylord sits at the center of some of Michigan's finest golf, with more than two dozen courses within a short drive. Otsego Lake State Park and Black Lake are both nearby for swimming and fishing, and downtown Gaylord has good dining and a genuine small-town feel. Ski resorts are within an easy winter commute.

Perfect For

Two families or a group of ten who want a proper great-room fireplace, outdoor deck space, and a peaceful forest address, with pets welcome along for the trip.
